Overview:

“Football, Tactics, & Glory” is a turn-based RPG where a gamer will control a group of football players on a football field that is cut up into a board made up of squares. The gamer must use these football players who have varying stats and positions to score goal on the opponents goal. Each player can have or develop a special position that provides special abilities to the football players while also training in or using an already gained special ability. Instead of using a purely chance based system to determine skill rolls. Stats are compared or used in a simple equation to determine how large of dice to roll for each player. This makes stats important and meaningful. The graphics are a bit basic for a football game, but they work well in a tabletop setting. Most football players are static until they have to perform and action. They then use a crisp animation based upon the dice rolls results. This is the main reason that the game has excellent performance. Finally, the sound design is great. The music hypes the player up during menus while it stays quiet during a match. During a match is when the crowd noise appears and reacts to the results of an action. This is a great game that will provide a ton of playtime.

Game Breakdown:

Gameplay:When starting up “Football, Tactics & Glory” the gamer is asked to pick from real life football clubs. Depending on where a team is based, the gamer will battle other team in the same region during tournaments. The most important part of a football team however is the players. A team in this game has 11 players on the field in total, the same as a regulation game of actual football. A team can also have 6 substitutes at a time and a reserve squad. Each player is unique when it comes to stats.

Each football player has varying amounts of four stats: accuracy, passing, defense, and control. Accuracy effects how high a player is able to roll against a goalie they are kicking against. Forwards benefit highly from this stat as they will be the main player type to shoot on the goal. Passing affects how well a player is able to pass to teammates, especially when forced to pass through opponent players. This stat is mainly used by the midfielders since they have the highest space movement ability and cand get the ball up the field quickly. Defense stats are used to affect how well a player can steal the ball from an opponent or block an opponent’s shots. Defenders love this stat the most. Control is useful for every position as it allows a player to hold onto the ball when being attacked with the defense stat. While the game tells the player that certain stats are best on different positions, all stats are quite good on every player. A midfielder that is great at stealing the ball from an opposing midfielder is an invaluable player. This game does heavily use a weighted RNG system that feels quite fair.

To perform any action, a dice roll must occur. The dice rolls are based off of a football player’s stats. When two players oppose one another in an action each player rolls a dice that ranges from 1 to the stat that is being checked. This makes the system feel much fairer than most other RPG RNG systems. The dice rolls can be further improved by using special skills. Special skills are abilities that can be trained, but take a while to be completed. Some abilities, when used on the field, allow the football player to perform multiple RNG dice rolls which allows a positive result to be achieved even if the first roll was failed. Skills such as “Head Play” also allow special actions to occur. If a player is near the goal and another player is in the corner of the field near the goal, then a cross can occur. During a cross, the player with “Head Play” will head the ball into the goal. If set up properly it can provide more success than a normal shot on goal. Finally, a skill that is successfully performed against an opposing player will provide another action for the gamer’s team. Each match allows both teams 48 actions on the recommended settings with each turn allowing three actions to occur and 24 actions per half. Skills are invaluable to the success of a team. Another way to gain special skills is to get a football player’s position level to tier 2.

Depending upon the actions a football player takes during a match, they will gain experience towards a specific position on the field. After gaining enough experience, the player can level up an ability in a player’s skill tree. Normal level ups only provide stats comparatively. These skills allow the gamer to keep a player as a universal class which does well in a wide area of play. A specialized position has way more abilities but can only use them at a specific place on the field. For example, a left midfielder only gains their special abilities on the left side of the field.

Upgrades can be bought outside of the match to help gain more experience and get better players. This is the small bit of management that is in the game. It could have been expanded a bit more because the gamer can only increase the size of their stadium and not what it looks like or contains.

Overall, this is an excellent title with a ton of replayability. If anyone is yearning for a good tabletop styled RPG, then I would suggest this one as it is a ton of fun.

Story:The story takes a back seat to the gameplay, but there is a backstory behind why the player is coaching an amateur league. The basic story is that the gamer is an injured pro football player who is offered the job as a manager. This story isn’t referenced often, but it is referenced enough to remind the gamer of who they are playing. It added to the game’s world building and helped to make me feel more a part of the game.

Sound:The sound design for this title is exceptionally good. The sound the ball makes when the football players kick it, to the crowds reactions. All sound realistic and it helped to immerse me into the game. Besides the crowd, the music hypes the gamer up which led me to excitedly yell out loud when I pulled off my first ever successful cross.

Graphics:The graphics are not as good as the latest FIFA’s level, but they work well for a turn-based soccer game. The football players have a cartoonish art style to them That fits because all of them are squished onto a smaller sized field. Due to the graphics being minimalist, the performance of this title is excellent and even runs on my lowest hardware testbed that has onboard graphics with shared memory.

Football, Tactics & Glory :: Update #10

We were often asked why we do not release Football Tactics from Early Access. Because the game is already good. We answered: “We don’t want Football Tactics to be a good game, we want it to be a great one”.

The newly released Update 10 is proof of our ambitions and a huge step towards making the game great.

Update #10 makes the matches significantly more tactical!

In the previous version, after 40-80 hours you could understand the basic tactics that work in most cases, and use only them.

In the update, the variability of tactics is so diverse that you should prepare your team for each match. Because for any tactic there is a counter tactic.

From this article, you will learn about some key features which make the game much more fun.

1) New classes (roles on the pitch)

Previously, the game had 4 classes: forwards, midfielders, defenders, and goalkeepers. Each of these classes had its own characteristics.

However, over time, we saw that 4 classes do not create enough variety in tactics and the game as a whole. The flanks did not work, the players did not differ much from each other, some tactics were obviously universal.

Therefore, we went further and created a system of classes similar to real football, where players are responsible for some zones on a pitch. At the same time, we retained the idea that some players can be useful in the whole field, not only in their narrow zone. So there are 4 universal classes, 9 special classes, and 4 amateur classes.

Each class has its own unique abilities. For example, the Attacking midfielder may perform a false kick. The defender of the opponent seeks to intercept the 'kick' and leaves his position. As a result, you can use the open space for your attack.

Or let’s take a Sweeper. If he stands alone on the last line of defense, he automatically tends to take a position opposite the ball. This allows you to cover the main directions of the attack.

At the same time, you always have the opportunity to prevent the enemy from using his clever tactics, if you realize in advance that he plans to use it. There are always counter tactics to everything opponent can come with.

2) Upgrading the classes

In the previous version of Football Tactics, players received experience for playing in matches, raising their overall level. In the update, the footballers also have a separate specialization level. It determines the uniqueness of the player.

Footballers earn specialization experience depending on the zone they play. If you want to make a novice player a right forward, place it on the right flank of the attack. If after that you want to make him also a right midfielder - put him to play on the right flank in the middle of the field.

When a footballer has learned to play at his position, earning the specialization XP allows you to develop the player in the direction that is important for you.

For example, you can focus on learning skills, on increasing the attributes or on making the player to be fans’ favourite. When fans love the footballer, they are more interested in attending your matches, and the sponsors are ready to pay more for fulfilling their conditions.

In the screenshot below, the sponsors increased payments by as much as 20% due to the fact that your team has 4 fan favourites.

Such (RPGish) leveling gives you the opportunity to plan ahead the development of your club. With some players, you will score goals, and with some - attract fans and sponsors.

By the way, the specialization screen is an example of how we plan to remake our entire interface by the release of the game from Early Access.

3) Headers, Crosses, and Flank play

As soon as we released the game in the Early Access, the players asked us to add the head play. For a long time, we worked out how it should work in the whole tactics, how to make it a full-fledged part of the game. Initially, we thought it’s enough if the head play is a part of the lofted passes.

But over time, we realized that it's not enough. It should be a part of something bigger. In real life, a good performance on the wings is important for successful headers. After all, the ball flies to the attackers from the flanks.

Therefore, we postponed the implementation of the head play until we decide how to implement the flank play. And the flank play was postponed until we decide how to implement the new classes. And after we saw the whole picture of how classes should work, the puzzle was solved - we understood, how to implement both flank and head play. Such was a long way of head play from idea to implementation.

I want to recall you that in order to perform a cross, a footballer with the ball should stand in one of the four corner tiles on the opponent’s side. Teammates having the Head play talent can be positioned in the opponent’s penalty area, or in rows two and three opposite the penalty area. When all the conditions for availability are met, select the footballer with the ball and a tile on the opposite side of the goal will be highlighted. Click on that tile to perform a cross. Also, you can perform crosses from the corners.

4) Footballpedia

Football Tactics - might not look like a serious game. But inside, there are a lot of hidden mechanics which start to live when you start a new campaign.

So if earlier we could limit ourselves to dozens of coach’s notes, in the new update, the amount of information that would be useful to take into account overstepped the limits of the “not so serious” game.

Therefore, we have added footballpedia which explains practically all aspects: what are abilities of each class, what you need to know about each game action, the details of performing the skills, how the players' transfer value is formed, what hidden characteristics of footballers there are, etc.

We also advise everyone, including veterans of the previous version of Football Tactics, to play the game with the 'Tutorial' option enabled. You will receive information from the old coach who will try to get acquainted you with all the main features of the game.

5) Updated messages and your assistants

You are the central hero of the game. You are a football manager who leads the team to the top of the world football due to your brilliant mind.

But apart from you, there are other characters in the football world: your assistants, the president of the club. Previously, they were hidden behind abstract-looking messages. Therefore, you had to force yourself to believe in the game world.

In this update, finally, you get to know the characters closer. Now, each message contains the date, subject, name, and photo of the sender.

And while your assistants’ role is only to inform you about your progress and the situation in your team, the president of the club and the old coach show more character and attitude towards you in the letters.

If you wanted to see their faces closer - you have a chance to do it now ;)

6) New way to train skills

Remember, how you wondered, why there is no choice in the skills learning window? Now there it is! Moreover, this choice is interesting. Footballers have different affinities to different skills, so you have to decide if you want to learn any skill as fast as possible or maybe take some time for more important skill.

7) Quality of life features

We always try to make the game more pleasant and comfortable for players. We watch the let's plays on Youtube, read your feedback and try to understand where you have the biggest difficulties.

In this update, we added one of the most anticipated features to improve the comfort in the game - it is the opponent viewing screen.

Remember how you had to go to the opponent's screen before and turn his team upside down in your imagination to understand how to better build your tactics. Now, you can study the enemy in details and prepare the optimal tactics for the next match in comfort.

By the way, tactical icons also appeared only in this update. They make it easy to understand the positioning of every class.

Another big step forward is 3D arrows for lofted passes and visualization of the diameters for all types of passes.

Many times we have seen how players don’t understand why the lofted pass is accessible, but the pass is not. Now you can see the distances for all kinds of passes.

8) Other changes

There are a lot of other improvements that I would like to tell you about. It’s the opportunity to start the game directly from Premier League, and the possibility to customize every detail of the footballers in the editor, and many fixed bugs, and greatly improved AI, and really hard difficulty mode, and the ability to kick out the ball, and the opportunity to throw it in :)

We put our souls into the game, trying to make it as interesting and deep as possible. Hope everyone has found something which made him be happy after the update ;)

9) What about the beta?

The beta version is not updating now. To continue playing, you need to exit the beta. After the release of this update, we will fix some bugs, improve some game elements, add some translations. All updates will be now only in the main version of the game.

Вступление

Если вы – футбольный фанат, то в игровой индустрии для вас припасен настоящий клондайк тематических проектов. Вам по душе зрелищные трансляции, достоверно воссозданные команды и внешний лоск? Выбирайте FIFA. Видите себя менеджером клуба, контролирующим все аспекты деятельности: от программы тренировок на неделю до выпрашивания у владельцев дополнительного финансирования? Ищите на прилавках Football Manager. Вас привлекает исключительно спортивная составляющая, с многообразием комбинаций, драматических моментов и случайных событий? Обратите внимание на Pro Evolution Soccer – именно она ближе прочих подобралась к правдоподобной симуляции.

А вот Football Tactics делает акцент не на первой половине своего названия, а на второй – футбол здесь просто фон, который без проблем можно было бы заменить, скажем, хоккеем, и ничего не потерять.

Теория вероятностей

Отчасти это и большой плюс для игры: она сумеет подружиться с публикой, прохладно относящейся к «двадцати двум мужикам, гоняющим мяч за миллионы долларов». Во главу угла поставлены цифры, вероятности и расчеты – то, что скорее ждешь в RPG по системе D&D или аналогах XCOM, нежели тут.

Фигурки, выходящие на поле, по сути не футболисты, а игроки в кости. Успешность практически каждого их действия (за вычетом бега) зависит от того, какие значения выпадут на воображаемых кубиках для них и их оппонентов. Представим, что нападающий захотел обвести защитника: если у него выпало 7, а у соперника – 2, то противоборство останется за форвардом, а вот если обороняющийся получит 13, то мяч будет потерян.

Напрямую повлиять на выпадающие числа никак нельзя, все решается волею случая. Однако диапазон исходов у футболистов различается: фактически значения четырех здешних характеристик (точность удара, пас, защита и контроль мяча) равны максимальному числу, которое может выпасть в борьбе.

В предыдущем примере нападающий с контролем 70 будет иметь намного больше шансов выйти победителем, чем его визави с защитой 30, хотя никому ничего не гарантировано.

450x253 54 KB. Big one: 1920x1080 645 KB У точных ударов больше шансов на успех, но при неудаче вратарь, скорее всего, зафиксирует мяч. А вот пробив на силу, вы с большей вероятностью заработаете угловой или даже подберете отскок.

Чисто теоретически такой принцип должен давать аутсайдерам надежду на позитивный исход, однако на деле фаворит начинает наглеть и ломать любые планы. Думаете, кто-нибудь из трех ваших защитников и голкипера, стоящих на линии удара, спасет ворота от гола с центра поля? Доставайте мяч из сетки!

Даже отправив всю команду в оборону, вы наверняка пропустите шальную «пулю» откуда-нибудь издалека, либо с удивлением обнаружите, что за счет превосходящих навыков соперник обставил половину вашего состава и вот-вот готов снять паутину с «девятки».

Вдобавок, пытаясь отобрать мяч у заведомо более мастеровитого оппонента, игроки частенько нарушают правила. Фолы обычно караются желтыми карточками, и судья назначает порой весьма опасные штрафные, а то и пенальти.

При первом варианте грамотно выстроенная оборона (установленная «стенка», прикрытые зоны вокруг штрафной площади) еще может вас выручить, а вот в случае одиннадцатиметровых уповать приходится лишь на собственное чутье: пробить могут как по центру, так и в левый/правый угол, и отразить атаку благодаря молниеносной реакции не выйдет – извольте угадывать.

450x253 47 KB. Big one: 1920x1080 404 KB Не заучивайте перед матчем, в какой угол нападающие предпочитают пробивать пенальти, здесь все решает везение.

Football Tactics гораздо комфортнее себя чувствует при встречах более-менее равных соперников, когда за счет тактики и расчета реально чего-то добиться. Непредсказуемые голы все еще прилетают, но реже, да и как без сюрпризов в большом спорте?

Зато верно расставив по позициям и линиям своих подопечных, прикрывая лидеров чужой команды и давя на ее слабые места, можно решить исход противостояния в свою пользу.

Компьютер, впрочем, склонен вам помогать: нередко он в безобидных эпизодах предпочитает придержать мяч вместо того, чтобы агрессивно атаковать, отдает инициативу, вяло реагирует на перемещения ваших форвардов.

Сражаться с человеком увлекательнее, однако найти себе компанию в мультиплеере оказалось нереально – мне пришлось просить друга о помощи.

450x253 53 KB. Big one: 1920x1080 643 KB Розыгрыш угловых сопровождается попытками защитников выпихнуть чужих форвардов из штрафной – не всегда успешными.

Бить или не бить

Football Tactics была рождена для мобильных устройств, да проблемы с финансированием вынудили украинскую Creoteam закрыть проект и после продолжительной паузы отправить его на персональные компьютеры.

«Портативные» корни продукта, правда, до сих пор видны за версту, начиная с милой, но простой графики и заканчивая незамысловатым геймплеем, и неподготовленный пользователь воскликнет, что ему самое место на планшетах или смартфонах.

450x253 55 KB. Big one: 1920x1080 667 KB Погодные условия также влияют на ход игры: в жару футболисты быстрее устают, а мокрый газон снижает точность пасов.

Механика очень проста и позволяет смаковать себя короткими сессиями: запустили на 15 минут, победили/продули пару раз, ушли по своим хлопотам. Перерывы удобно устраивать и прямо по ходу дела – игра пошаговая и совершенно не требует повышенной концентрации.

Это, конечно, не значит, что халатное отношение прокатит, а триумф сам приплывет в руки. За ход вы можете совершить лишь три действия (всего на матч их выделено 48/60/90 в зависимости от настроек), и, как правило, их недостаточно для внятной атаки, отчего вопрос грамотного размещения футболистов встает особенно остро.

А продолжить с того места, где закончили, соперник едва ли позволит: мяч и приходит, и уходит очень быстро. «Растянуть удовольствие» позволяют специальные приемы (подкаты, обводки, пасы на ход), компенсирующие одно действие в случае успеха, а дополнительные шаги тут на вес золота.

450x253 55 KB. Big one: 1920x1080 656 KB Простой пас на ход через половину поля выведет нападающего четко под ворота, однако возможности пробить уже не останется. Чтобы вернуть себе одно очко действий, необходимо направить передачу так, чтобы она прошла прямо возле защитника – то есть, в клетку над нашим форвардом. И не спрашивайте, что за чепуха.

Увы, доступны подобные навыки не каждому спортсмену. В единственном одиночном режиме, напоминающем футбольный менеджер для детей, их нужно тренировать целый сезон, а то и дольше – или спускать виртуальные средства на ускоренное развитие.

Только потратиться и так хватает на что: новички за спасибо не перейдут, контракты с нынешними подопечными продлевать тоже надо, да и квалифицированные тренеры, помогающие интенсивнее расти игрокам, бесплатно работать не станут. На начальных стадиях (любительская и худшие профессиональные лиги) деньги не столь важны, однако для высоких достижений (международные турниры, главный чемпионат страны) их нехватка критична.

К счастью для самой Creoteam, скромный бюджет проекта фатальной оплошностью не стал: игра звезд с неба не хватает, но сделана аккуратно и работает без нареканий.

Безусловно, на достоверный антураж рассчитывать не приходится – лиги и команды не лицензированы, поэтому управлять вы будете, скажем, не «Ювентусом», а черно-белым «Турином», но встроенный редактор и комплект пользовательских модификаций наверняка скрасят недочет.

Заключение

Жаль, что никакие фанатские труды не позволят Football Tactics вырваться из формата забавы на пару дней. Понятная и доступная механика недостаточно глубока для постоянных возвращений к ней, непредсказуемые расчеты – палка о двух концах, способная мгновенно отпугнуть настоящих тактиков, а мультиплеер, крайне важный для такого рода проектов, пуст и ничем, кроме банальных дуэлей, завлечь не готов.

Есть призрачные шансы, что до выхода проекта из «раннего доступа» Steam мы увидим радикальные перемены, но ждать, пока надежда умрет, совсем неохота.

Вердикт: тактика, удачно подходящая для мобильных платформ, на PC выглядит слегка инородно и простовато, но несколько часов у вас похитит.
